Discovering a Slower Side of Oʻahu: Our Family Adventure in Ko Olina

An Oʻahu getaway filled with ocean adventures, golden sunsets, and the kind of family memories that stay with you long after the journey home.

There is something about Hawaii that makes you want to slow down. I feel it from the moment I step off the plane.

Maybe it is the sound of the waves rolling onto the shore, the warmth of the sun on your skin, or the feeling that the best moments of the day are often the ones you never planned. For our family, a visit to Ko Olina on the island of Oʻahu was an opportunity to step away from our everyday routines, spend time together, and experience a different side of a place we love returning to.

As a photographer, I am always looking for more than a beautiful backdrop. I want to experience a place, notice the little details, discover something unexpected, and capture the moments that tell the story of a trip. Ko Olina offered the perfect setting for that kind of travel.

When we visit Hawaii, our family often gravitates toward the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. We love the energy, the restaurants, the shopping, and having so much to explore right outside our door. But our time in Ko Olina offered something a little different.

Here, we found ourselves embracing a more relaxed pace. Our mornings began with walks along the coast, our afternoons were spent enjoying the water, and there was no pressure to rush off to the next activity.

I found myself paying more attention to the details, the changing light, the ocean breeze, and the little moments that might otherwise pass us by.

Ko Olina reminded us that while we love the energy and excitement of Waikiki, there is something equally special about discovering a quieter side of Hawaii.

Sometimes, a change of pace is exactly what you need to reconnect with the people you're travelling with and appreciate the experience unfolding around you.

Finding Our Rhythm in Ko Olina

During our stay, we were fortunate to stay at Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club, thanks to the generosity of a friend. It gave us the opportunity to settle into this part of Oʻahu and experience the area at our own pace.

But what I remember most about our time there isn't a particular amenity or activity. It's the rhythm we fell into as a family.

Our days weren't built around a long list of things to see and do. Instead, we found ourselves returning to the same simple pleasures: morning walks, time by the ocean, and little discoveries that made each day feel special in its own way.

There is something lovely about getting to know a place beyond its most popular attractions. You begin to notice the small details, recognize familiar spots, and find your own little rituals.

For us, that meant embracing the mornings and letting the rest of the day unfold naturally.

The Little Adventures We Didn't Plan

One of my favourite things about travelling with our daughter is seeing a destination through her eyes.

As adults, we can get caught up in finding the best beaches, researching restaurants, and planning the perfect itinerary. Kids have a wonderful way of reminding us that adventure doesn't need to be complicated.

For my daughter, one of the highlights of our morning walks was spotting Hawaii's wild chickens.

They seemed to  wander around the grounds and along the paths, and finding them quickly became part of our daily routine. Each walk offered another opportunity to spot them, and something as ordinary as heading out for a stroll became an adventure in itself.

I love that about family travel. The things our kids remember most aren't always the big attractions or the experiences we carefully plan. Sometimes, they're the unexpected little moments that become part of the story of a trip.

And as a photographer, those are often the moments I want to remember, too.

Not everything needs to be perfectly planned or picture-perfect. Sometimes the best memories come from simply being there, paying attention, and letting the day surprise you.

Following the Coast and Discovering the Unexpected

One of the things we loved about our time in Ko Olina was being able to explore the surrounding coastline on foot.

Our walks became an opportunity to take in the ocean views, enjoy the tropical landscape, and see where the paths would lead us. We weren't always walking toward a particular destination. Sometimes, the walk itself was the plan.

One morning, we made our way toward Paradise Cove Lagoon and were fortunate to see sea turtles gliding through the shallow water, surfacing quietly in the early light.

On other walks farther along the coast toward the Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu at Ko Olina, we also discovered quieter stretches of shoreline where Hawaiian monk seals could sometimes be seen resting near the beach.

These encounters made our walks feel like little adventures of their own. There is something incredibly special about seeing wildlife in its natural environment

For me, these experiences are a big part of what makes travel so rewarding. You can visit a destination with certain expectations, but it is often the things you stumble upon along the way that stay with you.

Making Space for Something New

One morning, I joined a sunrise yoga class on the lawn, surrounded by palm trees with the ocean just steps away.

The sun was slowly rising, the breeze was light and warm, and everything felt quiet in that way only early mornings in Hawaii seem to. It was peaceful, grounding, and honestly, heavenly.

On another morning, I took part in a hula class in the same beautiful setting. It was an opportunity to try something different and connect with the place I was visiting in a way that went beyond simply enjoying the scenery.

Experiences like these reminded me that travel can be about more than seeing somewhere new. It can also be about being open to learning, stepping outside your usual routine, and making room for experiences you might not otherwise seek out.

Meanwhile, my daughter's favourite daily ritual was much simpler: feeding the koi.  It was something she talked about constantly.  She enjoyed watching the koi try to get the food before the resident bird affectionately named Sushi did.

She loved returning to the pond each morning, watching the fish gather and carefully feeding them. It was a small moment, but one that brought her so much joy.

Watching her find happiness in something so simple made me appreciate the slower pace even more.

An Evening of Hawaiian Culture

While we loved the slower pace of our days, we also made time for an evening out.

One night, we ventured over to Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, to experience the lūʻau. It was a memorable family evening and a chance to enjoy live entertainment and storytelling as part of our time on Oʻahu.

I always think some of the best trips find a balance between doing and being. There is room for special experiences, planned outings, and evenings you look forward to, alongside the unplanned moments that make a destination feel personal.

When visiting Hawaii, I also believe it is important to approach cultural experiences with curiosity and respect, taking the time to learn about the islands' history and living culture rather than treating them simply as part of the holiday experience.

For our family, the evening was another lovely memory to add to a trip filled with moments both big and small.

Why I Want to Keep Travelling with My Family

As a family adventure photographer based in British Columbia, I spend much of my time outdoors, documenting connection, movement, and the relationships that make our experiences meaningful.

Travel allows me to bring that same perspective into a new landscape.

I love seeing how travel brings our family together.

I want our daughter to grow up curious about the world. I want her to experience different landscapes and cultures, try new things, and understand that there is so much to discover beyond what is familiar.

I also want to remember these years as they happen.

Time moves quickly, and family life can be wonderfully busy. Between school, work, activities, and everyday responsibilities, it can be easy to move from one thing to the next without stopping to appreciate where we are.

ALOHA: Taking the Memories Home

Looking back, what stands out most about our time in Ko Olina is not a checklist of places we visited or activities we completed.

It's the feeling of our morning walks, my daughter's excitement at spotting another wild chicken, the sea turtles gliding through the water, the quiet of sunrise yoga, and her daily visits to feed the koi.

These are the details that bring a trip back to life long after we've returned home.

As a photographer, I believe the most meaningful images do more than show us what a place looked like. They bring us back to how it felt to be there. They remind us of the people we were with, the things that made us laugh, and the little moments we might otherwise forget.

That is what I want my travel stories to do, too.

Our time in Ko Olina reminded me that the best trips aren't always the ones with the fullest itineraries or the most adventures packed into each day. Sometimes, they're the ones where we give ourselves permission to slow down, stay curious, and let a place reveal itself in its own time.

Because travel isn't just about where we go. It's about the memories we make, the connections we strengthen, and the stories we bring home.

And if there is one thing I will always say yes to, it is another family adventure.
