As I was in Dominican Republic for this week’s theme I thought it would be fitting for the theme to be Sunrises or Sunsets. Em McDermott actually suggested this theme awhile ago. Lucy for me every night in Dominican provided a picture perfect opportunity for a sunset photo. I had a plan in mind when I went to take the photo as I feel sunsets also provide a great opportunity to practice silhouettes so I used the Palm trees as a silhouette which I felt brought more pop to the sunset.
Some tips for this week:
~ probably one of the most important tips I can give and I have learnt is to not only take photos as the sun is setting but wait when the sun sets. That time (the 10-20 minutes) can really provide you with some lovely colors in the sky.
~ use a tripod – I unfortunately couldn’t bring my tripod on the trip so I improvised for the photo above and used a beach chair
~ add interest by incorporating a subject other than just the sunset (i.e. in this case I added the palm trees)
~ Scout locations; know sunrise/sunset times.
~ General rule-of-thumb: Sun in sky? Aperture priority. Sun already set? Use manual exposure.
~ Always shoot RAW (NEF or NRW) files.
