With the new year approaching, comes the the thought of new years resolutions. I came up with the idea of a 52 week photo challenge as I wanted to continue to push myself to learn everything there is about photography. The idea behind the 52 week photo challenge is that each week there will be a new theme which will mean new techniques and lessons to learn. I am so excited to share in the 52 week photo challenge with you 🙂
2013 is fast approaching and I wanted to give you plenty of time for your first week of the 52 week photo challenge
To begin 2013 the first week of the 52 week photo challenge’s theme is ’52 steps from your front door’
I was away at Sun Peaks Resort, British Columbia this past weekend and this is the site I seen 52 steps from my doorway, a beautiful winter wonderland 🙂
Here are a few tips on how I achieved this shot
As the sun was setting I decided I would do an HDR shot. HDR is a technique that stands for high dynamic range. It is a set of methods that allows for a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image and is pretty easy to achieve once you get the hang of it. I took 3 photos of the same image at 3 different exposures (under , normal & over exposed). and than combined them together in a program called photomatix pro.
For this image I shot on Aperture priority mode f 5.3.
Other helpful tips for this weeks challenge:
I challenge you this week to step away from auto mode and perhaps try aperture priority mode. If you are shooting a landscape maybe try f8 or f 11 if you are trying to take an up close picture of a flower etc perhaps try f5.6 or lower
As your image will most likely be shot outside you might want to play with your ISO settings. For example if you are shooting during the day try ISO 100 or 200, at night you will need to bump the ISO up but be careful as when you make it higher you risk more noise.
But the number 1 thing is have fun 🙂 Feel free to post your image that you shot this week on my facebook fan page so we can all see and stay tuned for week 2’s challenge which will be announced on January 6th 2013 🙂
Happy shooting and a very happy new year
